Ophelia Akosah-Bempah is a seasoned Chartered Company Secretary with over 20 years’ experience in governance and company secretarial practice in a multi-listed corporate environment (mainly in mining and banking). She has extensive knowledge and expertise in corporate governance, including reviewing and drafting governance policies ensuring their contents comply with relevant laws and regulations. Other areas of specialisation include statutory and legislative compliance, corporate law, Banking legislation and stock exchange listings requirements and rules.
Ophelia has expert knowledge in the application of governance Codes including the King Code on Corporate Governance for South Africa, governance directives of central banks in South Africa and several other African countries including Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Mauritius, and Mozambique.
Key contributors to the development and rollout of the Group Governance Framework for the Absa Group as prescribed by the King IV Report of Corporate Governance.
Headed the company secretarial function at Anglo Gold Ashanti (Ghana and South Africa).
Overseeing the appointment and induction of new directors, as well as the ongoing education of directors, effective management of board members, co-ordination of committee and shareholder meetings, also conducted board effectiveness evaluations and director rotations, succession planning and director exits (due to resignation, retirement etc).
